Three-wave solitons and continuous waves in media with competing quadratic and cubic nonlinearities.
We formulate a general model of three-wave optical interactions (in the spatial domain), which combines quadratic (chi(2)) and cubic (chi(3)) nonlinearities, the latter including four-wave mixing. The model can be realized in chi(2) materials where an effective chi(3) nonlinearity is engineered by means of the quasi-phase-matching technique. Both self-focusing and self-defocusing chi(3) nonline...
متن کاملA Time-Splitting Spectral Method for Three-Wave Interactions in Media with Competing Quadratic and Cubic Nonlinearities
This paper introduces an extension of the time-splitting spectral (TSSP) method for solving a general model of three-wave optical interactions, which typically arises from nonlinear optics, when the transmission media has competing quadratic and cubic nonlinearities. The key idea is to formulate the terms related to quadratic and cubic nonlinearities into a Hermitian matrix in a proper way, whi...
متن کاملStability of Three-Wave Parametric Solitons in Diffractive Quadratic Media.
Analysis of wave interaction in nonlinear media is a fundamental problem of nonlinear physics. Resonant interaction is especially interesting since it leads to an energy exchange between waves of different carrier frequencies. In a medium without the center of symmetry, quadratic nonlinearity results in parametric three-wave mixing when two waves create a third wave at a combined frequency v3 ...
متن کاملCompeting Mechanisms
The recent literature on competing mechanisms has devoted a lot of effort at understanding a very complex and abstract issue. In particular, an agent’s type in a competitive environment is hard to conceptualize because it depends on information the agent has about what is going on in the rest of the market. This paper explains why this is such an important practical problem and illustrates how ...
متن کاملCompeting nonlinearities in quadratic nonlinear waveguide arrays.
We demonstrate experimentally the existence of competing focusing and defocusing nonlinearities in a double-resonant system with quadratic nonlinear response. We use an array of periodically poled coupled optical waveguides and observe inhibition of the nonlinear beam self-action independent on power. This inhibition is demonstrated in both regimes of normal and anomalous beam diffraction.
